About Us

Shropshire has a rich literary heritage, celebrated through literary societies such as the Mary Webb and Wilfred Owen Societies, regular visits to Shrewsbury by eminent authors, historians and politicians and through the County’s many reading groups and arts associations.

However in 1998 a group of interested volunteers met to discuss starting up an annual literary festival specifically for children and families. Our first weekend festival took place in 1999, and since then we have established a fine reputation for excellence amongst authors, publishers and our keen supporters.

We have always been an independent, not-for profit organisation. Our income is generated through ticket sales to events and small grants from local businesses and Shrewsbury and District Arts Association.
We are currently in the process of applying for Charitable Status, and hope to hear later this year whether we have been successful.

Bookfest activities are developed and run by a very small band of nine volunteer committee members, who collectively spend many hundreds of hours per year putting together Bookfest’s programme of high quality events.

These include:

March:     Authors in Schools week

May:        Bookfest Festival Weekend (the main event!)

October:  Autumn Mini-Bookfest
