Aesop's
Fables
 |
Scamp Theatre's engaging and magical
performance of Aesop's Fables, based on Michael Morpurgo's
retelling, was the perfect way to round off Shrewsbury
Children's Bookfest 2008. Like all the best things billed as
being 'family entertainment', this genuinely did entertain and
delight the entire audience at Shrewsbury Music Hall, young and
old.
With only three actors and scenery consisting mainly of two
stepladders, the characters and fables were ingeniously and
magically brought to life. And with no awkward pauses for scene
breaks or costume changes, the audience were kept spellbound
throughout.
Fables such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf (who really did get eaten
at the end – having become a pink marshmallow!), The Goose that
Laid the Golden Egg (when a white paper bag and a pair of tongs
became an utterly believable goose), The Miller's Son and the
Donkey, The Wind and the Sun and The Traveller and the Bear were
all seamlessly woven together through music and song. And to the
huge delight of the audience, the Tortoise and the Hare 'ran'
their race right round the theatre, chatting to the children as
they went.
The wonderful music was composed and performed by one of the
actors, who played accordion, guitar, cello, drums, xylophone
and keyboard – a genuine one-man band. For good measure, he also
became a bear and a wolf and a narrator at various stages during
the show.
Scamp Theatre left the audience wishing their performance of
Aesop's Fables could have been twice as long. Shrewsbury
Bookfest looks forward to welcoming them back soon!
