Helen Craig and Angelina Ballerina

On Saturday 3 May, devotees of mousetastic 'Angelina Ballerina' were treated to a visit from Helen Craig, Angelina's co-creator and illustrator. Helen comes from a dynasty of theatrical talent – her great-grandmother was the stage actress Ellen Terry and her grandfather was the theatrical scenic designer Edward Gordon Craig. We were very lucky to persuade Helen to come and see us in Angelina’s 25th year and share some of her secrets about how she draws the very famous mouse.

Mouselings dressed in beautiful ‘Angelina at the Palace’ outfits came from far and wide to the Lantern Community Hall in Harlescott, to take part in two sessions of story-telling, craft, illustration and dancing. Every mini-mouse was treated to some whiskers and a nose before learning how to sketch Angelina in her famous pink dress. Next came story time, with our own ‘Angelina Ballerina’ (Victoria) complete with whiskers, nose, tail and ears. All the Mouselings joined in as Angelina lead the dancing around the room. More storytelling followed, with a lucky winner taking home Helen’s beautiful drawing.

All the children had a wonderful time getting a taste of what fires the imagination of an illustrator, how long it takes to draw one picture of Angelina, as well as seeing what pointe shoes look and feel like when you become a grown-up mouse.

What the audience said:

"Good range of activities, fun for all."

"Well targeted at age group. Lots of fun, especially having a ballerina here."

"Good. The girls really enjoyed it – great value for money."
