National Ballet Workshops
On Saturday 3 May, several aspiring
ballerinas came to the Lantern Community Hall to take class with
Rachel Newby, a dancer from English National Ballet, one of the
world's great ballet companies.
All the girls (no boys!) were beautifully turned out in
leotards, tights and ballet shoes. After a few basic exercises
at the barre to warm up, they took to the floor and Rachel
taught them the dance of the Lilac Fairy's attendants from The
Sleeping Beauty. To the strains of Tchaikovsky's inspirational
music, played by Phil Spencer, a professional pianist from the
company, the girls soon picked up the routine. Rachel then
divided the class into two and told them to create their own
ending to the dance. After several moments of anxious
whispering, the girls soon got into the spirit of the occasion
and devised two very different but truly inventive routines.

The audience of enraptured parents, relations and friends were
then treated to a final performance that was greeted with
tumultuous applause. This was a once in a lifetime experience
for some of the girls and all of them went home with memories to
treasure.
What the audience said:
"Excellent enthusiasm from the teacher and the pianist."
"A wonderful, energetic, creative session. More please!"
"It was very good and very enjoyable. The steps were well
explained and it
made it easier to interpret the music."
