With the help of a generous grant from a local trust fund, Bookfest has put together a programme to help primary school pupils in Years 3 and 4 to commemorate the First World War and to remember the animals that served and risked their lives.

Bookfest Remembers is supported by:

During the first week of the Autumn Term in 2017, Bookfest is providing 15 primary schools with...

  • Between 10 and 15 copies of Hilary Robinsons’s book Flo of the Somme.

  • Comprehension worksheets to support class discussions

During class discussion children will be asked to consider the following:

  • What was the role of dogs and other animals during the First World War and what sort of relationship did they have with the soldiers in the Trenches?

  • What can it have been like for the animals living in such a dangerous and noisy place?

  • Over 50,000 dogs, more than 100,000 pigeons and approximately 8,000,000 horses and mules along with cats, goats, rabbits, chickens and elephants were used on all sides during the Great War.   How would you feel if your pet was taken off to serve in a war?
