Think Like a Pony

Young pony-lovers were treated to a real masterclass at Berriewood Riding Centre, Condover on Sunday 3 May. Lynn Henry's passion and enthusiasm for helping children to understand how their ponies are feeling, what they're thinking and what they're trying to say shone through. With the help of young volunteers Isabelle Moeller and Rhiannon Corke and Berriewood ponies Merrywether and Harry, Lynn explained what the little signals and sounds ponies make really mean.

The audience watched in fascination as she demonstrated how the mother of a new foal gently teaches its offspring what she wants him to do. And within minutes, Lynn had both Merrywether and Harry following her, stopping and walking backwards as soon as she gave the signal they would remember from their earliest days – clearly recognising her as a human who spoke their language! Isabelle and Rhiannon quickly learnt how to give those signals too, and Merrywether and Harry happily followed them around the riding centre, doing whatever was asked of them.

It was clear that the Bookfest audience were just seeing a little snapshot of the wealth of knowledge and experience Lynn Henry has built up over the last 15 years. Above all, her message was about respecting ponies and how an understanding of their behaviour and character can help children genuinely become their pony's best friend. And in the short sessions at Berriewood, she demonstrated just how immediate and magical the effects of her approach are.

Her audience left the stables full of inspiration and enthusiasm for putting her words of wisdom into immediate effect, many of them clutching copies of Lynn Henry's Think Like a Pony workbooks. – And remembering never to pat their ponies again. They don't like it – they want to be stroked, not whacked!

What the audience said:

"Brilliant. Learnt so much and really enjoyed the event."

"Interesting and informative, some ideas to take away and use with our pony."

"Lovely presenter, very informative, have bought the book!"
