WREN MILLER
Biography
Wren Miller was born into a vibrant and creative family in Shropshire and brought up on the Long Mynd. Wren feels she is the luckiest person alive. She lives and works with top artists and musicians in West Africa, a magical place. She will weave her magic and get you all involved in making together, transforming one thing into another. Working with Wren provides an opportunity for your school to contribute to children’s and adults’ literacy education. It is a vehicle for enhancing awareness of other cultures; recycling and sharing our blessings = global citizenship.
Event synopsis
Wren offers a unique activity; she will bring an African flavour to her work, through context, images, music, stories, children’s games, and even, children’s clothes. First, though, she asks that everybody sorts, collects and brings old, loved books to school to use as the materials. Then class by class, she makes sculptures. See an armchair grow from a pile of books, make a maze, or even a house! This activity is accessible, fun and full of challenges. It’s hard to do without stopping and reading a few books along the way. But the best is yet to come. The books your school has collected will support Wren’s work in Mali where she’s developing a charity to collect books for this, one of the poorest countries in the world, where books are like gold dust. Hear her tell the story when children literally chased her down the street because she was carrying books. The 2012 Send a Book to Mali target is 2000 books, with 1000 to go to schools and literacy projects in the unique Dogon country.
Wren Miller will be visiting Shrewsbury High Prep School on Wednesday 14th March.
